The Association of Heads of Independent Girls' Schools

Origin

At the Women's Club on 8th November, 1916 a group of eight headmistresses formed The Association of Head Mistresses of New South Wales. Elected as Foundation President was Miss Edith Badham (SCEGGS Darlinghurst). Other members included: (St. Catherines), Miss Margaret Murray (Abbotsleigh), (Frensham), (PLC Pymble), Miss Minnie and Miss Clara Roseby (Kambala).

Eligibility for membership was offered to twenty-three schools.

A national association was formed in 1945. AHIGS New South Wales Heads served as Presidents of that body as follows:

Educated at SCEGGS Darlinghurst 1949-1954. B.A. Sydney University and Dip. Ed.UNE. Taught classics at SCEGGS Wollongong 1958-1961 and Hornsby Girls' High 1962-64.
Headmistress Girton Girls' School Adelaide 1964-1967. After teaching in Sydney, appointed Second Assistant at Ravenswood.
Head of SCEGGS Darlnghurst 1978.
President AHIGS 1987, 1992-1993
Awarded AM 1998 for contribution to education of young women, to the professional development of her peers and to educational management.

PHYLLIS BRYANT
Headmistress, Frensham July 1938-September 1965.
Graduated from Bedford Physical Training College. 1927 manager of English women's hockey team. Invited to teach at Frensham 1931. Returned to England 1932. Returned to work with Miss West during 1937 prior to assuming headship. Strong interests in games, art, music and international co-operation.

Involvement in Teachers' Guild from 1949, Foundation Chairman of Guild College Council. Executive member of AHIGS for 20 years.

Headmistress, Kambala 1966-1984
Educated at Hornsby Girls' High School and Sydney University where she studied Social Work. Taught Geography Economics and Divinity at Meriden. Appointed Headmistress at Claremont College, Randwick. Travelled overseas prior to appointment as Headmistress of Kambala in 1966. Became first woman Lay Canon at St, Andrew's Cathedral and first woman member of St. Andrew's Cathedral School Council.

Educated at St. Gabriel's . Graduated in Arts from Sydney University (Latin, French, English, Philosophy, History. Taught at St. Garbiel's and MLC. Appointed Headmistress at 33 and strengthened academic curriculum.

DOROTHY KNOX B.A., FACE
Headmistress Presbyterian Ladies College, Pymble. July 1936-1966
Born in Victoria. Educated Warragul Agricultural High School.
Following the Leaving Certificate, attended Melbourne High School for a year for Honours examination. Won scholarship to Trinity College, University of Melbourne. graduating in Arts. Taught History and French PLC Goulburn 1923. Travelled abroad. Returned to PLC Goulburn. Principal PLC Orange 1932-June 1936.

ANNE McGRATH B.A., Dip. Ed.
Principal, Kincoppal-Rose Bay,m 1970-1990
Educated at Kincoppal-Rose Bay and Australian National University, majoring in French and History, Dip.Ed. at Monash University. Prior to appointment as Mistress General (1966-1969) she had been Mistress of Discipline, - Rose Bay. Following university study she returned to lead the amalgamated Kincoppal-Rose Bay School. She had a 36 year association with the school at the time of her retirement.

After time in London became tutor at Macquarie University 1965.

Conducted research into Girls' Secondary Education in NSW 1880-1930.

SHEILA MORTON
Head Mistress, Meriden 1966 - 1984
Arrived from England to teach Biology at Meriden. Became Boarding Mistress.
Responsible for expanding curriculum, music and sporting activities to respond to the Wyndham Scheme. Interests include The National Trust, The Art Gallery, knitting and embroidery.

FAYE MORRIS-YATES B.Sc. Dip.Ed.
Headmistress PLC Armidale - 1973
Sydney born, educated at Sydney University graduating in Science with honours in Mathematics. She had been Senior Mistress at PLC Orange and Senior Mistress at Abbotsleigh before appointment as Head at PLC Armidale, aged 43. She was one of the founders of the New England Educational Diagnostic Centre to help children with learning difficulties. She served on the Council of Armidale College of Advanced Education. Illness forced her resignation. She served on a part time basis of the Schools Commission.

PETER MOXHAM B.A Dip. Ed.
Principal, Kambala 1988 - May 1999
Educated at Knox Grammar School and Hurlstone Agricultural High School. Graduated from Sydney University in Arts and Diploma of Education. Taught in city and country government secondary schools. Head of History, The Kings School. History Co-ordinator Kambala prior to appointment as Principal.

MERRILEE ROBERTS B.A. B.Ed. FACE
Headmistress - Ascham Term 3, 1962 - 1972
Educated at Abbotsleigh and the University of Sydney.
During W.W.II worked with de Havilland Aircraft.
Deputy SCEGGS Moss Vale, Headmistress Newcastle Girls' Grammar School.
Fellow of Australian College of Education from 1970.
Member of Teachers' Guild Council and Chairman of Teacher Training committee.

FAITH PATTERSON B. Sc. (Hons)
Headmistress, St Catherines' Waverley 1955 - 1987. Honours Science graduate from Sydney University. Taught Science and Geography in Government schools 1948 - 1951. Became Travelling Secretary for Inter-School Christian Fellowship in Newcastle area. Invited to become Headmistress of St.Catherines at 28. A huge building program was undertaken and enrolments grew from 200-900. Greatly valued for membership of AHIGS, especially the mentoring she received from Miss Margery Rooney of Launceston's Broadland House.

CYNTHIA PARKER OAM Dip. P.E. (Bedford)
Headmistress, Frensham 1968 - 1993
Graduate of Bedford College of Physical Education; previously Royal Academy of Dance scholar. Taught at East Ham Girls' Grammar School prior to appointment as games mistress and housemistress at Frensham. Returned to England to teach for two years at Sir John Cass and Redcoat School Stepney in the London dockland. Appointed to Frensham as Acting Headmistress for two years at 32 by the governors. Permanent appointment followed. She was able to use her administrative acumen to deal with both government bureaucracy and company structures, adapting to new economic climate.
